Cabin Sitting: a collection
I couldn’t of brought this vision to life without the help of my biggest supporter
Id like to extend my forever gratitude and thanks, as I wouldn’t be writing this without your encouragement.
A small collection of photos inspired by a cabin
In this small A-frame cabin, windows line an upstairs loft, several beds are pushed up against the slanted roof, and a blanketed feeling of equal warmth and solitude envelop my emotions as I begin to settle in. I look across this new space, and a photo emerges from my thoughts: A nude pose within these abnormally slanted windows. A soft photo, with quiet thoughts, and subtle emotions. Something slightly out of the ordinary, yet still plausible and strangely familiar.
I wanted to convey the grace of human existence and form juxtaposed with the loneliness that can be occasionally felt during our lives. The beauty of the wood grain pairs well with the beauty of this model’s figure seemingly trapped-by choice-within the window. This is what I envisioned, and what I was able to create.
This shoot is very personal to me. It marked the final goodbye to a long and passionate partnership between two beautiful souls. These photos evoke emotions that seemed to reside within my chest in relation to this final visit.
What’s interesting, is I didn’t curate this shoot to the inner turmoil I carried, it was only later in post-processing did I realize I was expressing my emotions through the camera.
Ill pull several elements from these photos to display how they make me feel
In my eyes, the window represents a barrier to a desired environment. An outsiders perspective.
The positioning in the window evokes feelings of pain, sorrow, and the anxious emotions felt when one may find themselves lost; unsure what to do with themselves.
The darkness is also representative of that feeling of being lost, in addition to adding a sense of silence surrounding the subject, further highlighting the feeling of seclusion.
This short series is about loss
The Final Photo
Shot a few days later, just outside the cabin where the previous shoot took place, and created alone, this image is solemn. It evokes feelings similar to the rest of the series, but unlike the others, it holds no curiosity or contemplation—only loss. It expresses emotions we can relate to, understand, and empathize with. Being unclothed in a cold environment is undeniably abnormal, but so are the things we do when carrying the weight of separation. Love has no limits, and neither does the pain left by its absence. Still, there is always light at the end of the tunnel, and always the promise of a new day.
Thank you for reading this far, and for allowing another flower to bloom. Your smile is a gift no one but you could give.
The Process
My process was simple: find someone to model, and use the natural lighting to provide a sense of realism.
However, I also wanted to reveal the smooth texture of skin and the way the body folds and shapes itself within the window sill. For several frames, I introduced a small amount of ambient light from inside the cabin to bring out forms that would have otherwise remained hidden in shadow. This light also illuminated the surrounding wood, adding texture to the space and gently shifting some focus away from the subject and onto the grain of the environment. Before my subject arrived, I took a few photographs of myself to better understand the composition and available light. One of these resulted in a self-portrait that pairs closely with a similar image of her.
Because of this unexpected connection, I presented the two images as a diptych in the “Fall 2025” gallery page, as I believe they effectively convey the shared pain of two people, each lost without the other.
loss and separation are difficult to handle
Its easy reading the name of a lost love one and briefly remembering them in a general nature: the way they look, the things you’d talk about, the activities you’d enjoy together, so on and so forth. The true pain resides in the memories we hold deeper, the quiet happenings we might forget, the texture of their skin as a breeze pushes their hair to the side on a warm sunny day, sitting together on that perfect sitting rock along your favorite beach. Love makes us vulnerable, and its those tender, vulnerable moments that create such a strong bond between two souls. There’s a gaze that resides in that vulnerability you couldn’t find elsewhere. A gaze that could melt a pound of butter in a heartbeat. Its a look you take for granted no matter how much you cherish each lovely second you can gaze into it. It provides a beautiful warmth we grow numb to the absence of when its finally gone.
These photos are absent of any faces, their gaze opposite the viewer. The feelings we pull from these photos are provided solely from the body language, a powerful reminder that sometimes words don’t need to be spoken in order to provide a message, and that sometimes, forgetting that deep gaze, may be in our best interest for our journey in healing.
